Things people ask
If your question isn't here, email us at rental@jatakbikerental.dk.
Booking
Do I need to book?
Not in the walk-in hours: just come in. Booking ahead holds the bikes for you, which is worth doing on summer weekends.
How far ahead can I book?
About a year. If you want something further out than the calendar allows, email us.
Can I change my dates?
Yes: cancel and book again. Cancelling is free up to 72 hours before the start, and the new booking is at the price for the new dates. Closer than that, please email us at rental@jatakbikerental.dk: if the bikes are free on your new dates, we'll see what we can do.
Do I pay when I book?
Yes: you pay when you book, with your preferred payment method from the ones available to you, and the confirmation email is your receipt.
The bikes
Can I get a helmet?
Yes, a helmet for every rider, adults and children: DKK 25 per helmet for the whole rental. Add helmets when you book, or ask at the shop. They're self-service: pick one that fits when you collect your bikes. Nobody has to wear one in Denmark, adults or children, but we recommend it.
Can I get a phone holder?
Yes, one for each bike: DKK 25 per phone holder for the whole rental. Add them when you book, or ask at the shop.
Is a lock included?
Yes, always, on every bike. Bike theft is common in Copenhagen. Use it even for two minutes.
What if I'm very tall or very short?
Tell us your height when you book, in centimetres or in feet and inches, and we reserve a bike in the right size for every day of your rental. If every bike in your size is taken on your dates, the booking page offers a close fit (slightly smaller, a lower saddle), the nearest dates where your size is free, or another bike type in your size. If it's still wrong when you arrive, we swap it there and then at no cost.
Can my child ride with me?
Yes. Book a city bike with child seat (roughly 1 to 5 years, up to 22 kg) or with toddler seat (roughly 9 months to 3 years, up to 15 kg), and the seat is fitted before you arrive. For two children, the cargo bike carries both.
Have the bikes got gears?
Most have seven. Copenhagen is flat, so gears matter less here than you might expect.
Riding in Copenhagen
Is Copenhagen easy to cycle in?
Yes: it's flat, and most streets have wide bike lanes of their own.
Which side do I ride on?
The right. Overtake on the left, and put your arm out before you stop or turn: it's expected here, not optional politeness.
Do I need lights?
They're a legal requirement after dark, and they're fitted to every bike we rent. If a light stops working, come back and we'll fix it.
Where do I leave the bike?
Anywhere sensible, locked. Not blocking a doorway, a bike lane, or the pavement outside a shop. Copenhagen tows bikes that are in the way.
What if it rains?
We'd refund rain if we could send the bill to the clouds. We can't, so there are no refunds for weather. It rarely lasts.
Picking up and bringing back
What do I need to bring?
Please bring photo ID with the same name as the booking, and give us your name or booking reference. You don't need to print anything.
Can I collect outside your opening hours?
Yes, if you book. On many days the booked pickup hours are longer than the walk-in hours: when you book, choose a fixed pickup time outside the walk-in hours, by 18:00 the day before, and someone comes in to the shop just for you. Please be on time, and to change the time, email us first. On a day open for booked pickups only, the time is chosen when you book; on a day the shop is fully closed no pickup can be booked. The hours of every day are on the Locations page.
When do the bikes come back?
By 09:30 on the morning after your last day: Tuesday to Thursday is three days, so the bikes come back by 09:30 on Friday. When the shop is closed, park the bikes in the bike rack in front of the shop and lock them with all the locks. Put the keys and the loose accessories in the designated self-return box: anything we gave you that isn't fixed to the bike, such as a phone holder or a light on an elastic band. Anything fixed to the bike or part of it, such as the bell, screwed-on lights and the saddle, stays on the bike. Then email a photo of the locked bikes to return@jatakbikerental.dk: the time you send it counts as your return time.
What if it breaks?
We can't help on the road, but in opening hours you can bring the bike back and we'll swap it, or repair it if no other bike is free. Normal wear, like a puncture, costs you nothing.
What if the bike is stolen?
Please tell us as soon as you can, and bring us the keys. You pay the bike's value, as listed in our rental terms.
If your plans change
Cancelling 72 hours or more before your rental starts (09:30 on your first day)
Free. We refund the whole amount the way you paid. Refunds usually show within 5 to 10 working days.
Cancelling less than 72 hours before
We charge the full price.
Not turning up
If you don't come and haven't cancelled in time, we charge the full price.
Changing your dates
Cancel and book again. Cancelling is free up to 72 hours before the start, and the new booking is at the price for the new dates. Closer than that, please email us at rental@jatakbikerental.dk: if the bikes are free on your new dates, we'll see what we can do.
Rain
There are no refunds for weather.
If we cancel your booking
Whatever the reason, you get back everything you paid.
When the rental ends
A rental day runs until 09:30 the next morning, so bikes for Tuesday to Thursday come back by 09:30 on Friday. Bikes brought back late are charged a full extra day.
